Aluminum Acetate Soak
Aluminum acetate, also known as Burow’s solution, is a clear liquid made of aluminum ions and acetic acid molecules. It is available for purchase without a prescription and can be found in most pharmacies. When applied topically to the skin, aluminum acetate acts as an astringent and helps dry the oozing blisters characteristic of poison ivy exposure. Additionally, it helps to soothe the burning, itching sensation often associated with this type of rash.
Before using aluminum acetate solution, wash the affected area with soap and water. Pat dry gently with a clean towel. Next, soak a cotton pad or clean cloth in the solution and apply it directly to the rash. Repeat this process every 3 to 4 hours or until the rash clears up completely. It is important to note that aluminum acetate should not be used on broken skin or open wounds.
