Increase Fluid Intake
While there is no cure for viral and bacterial pink eye, which means it will have to run its course, some treatments available will help alleviate symptoms. One such treatment is increased fluid intake.
Drinking plenty of fluids helps prevent dehydration, which can exacerbate symptoms of pink eye, such as dry eyes, burning sensation, itchiness, and blurred vision. A study found that increased fluid intake not only helps with symptom relief but also helps thin mucus secretions, so they drain more quickly from your nose and sinuses. Drinking plenty of fluids when you have a cold or sinus infection can also help with this.
No specific fluid is particularly effective, but experts recommend plain water as a good option because it’s calorie-free and doesn’t contain caffeine or alcohol.
If you don’t see any improvement in symptoms after a few days of treating pink eye at home, it’s time to see a doctor. An individual with pink eye may need medication to get rid of the infection. In rare cases, pink eye can lead to serious complications like corneal ulcers, so it’s important to get treatment immediately if the symptoms are severe.
