Honey
Honey has been used as a natural remedy for centuries in treating coughs and congestion due to its anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties. In addition, for those who can’t use conventional treatments due to allergies or other conditions, honey has been known to help relieve symptoms of the common cold and flu, especially when combined with zinc gluconate lozenges to reduce the duration of illness.
When the mucus membrane is irritated by pollen, dust, or other irritants, it produces more mucus to protect itself. Unfortunately, this causes the body to go into a “hyper-productive” state where it can produce too much mucus. Honey’s anti-microbial properties work to kill off any infection causing the excess production of mucus so that the body can return to normal.
To use honey for congestion, take one tablespoon mixed with one teaspoon of ground ginger (or cinnamon) twice daily for up to seven days. This mixture can be taken as a tea, added to hot water, or swallowed. Ginger and cinnamon are added because they help reduce inflammation and are natural decongestants that relieve nausea.
