Saltwater Gargle
Saltwater gargles are one of the oldest forms of treatment for excessive mucus. Saltwater is known to kill bacteria and alleviate symptoms in the throat and chest, like soreness, coughing, and difficulty breathing.
Saltwater gargles work by drawing moisture to the surface of the mouth and throat. Using a large amount of salt water instead of a smaller amount of freshwater increases the salinity, naturally pulling more moisture from the tissue. This can help with soreness caused by mucus stuck in the back of the throat. It can also help combat a cough caused by excess mucus by reducing inflammation.
While saline gargles are beneficial in treating excess mucus and sore throats, they are not recommended for those with asthma or COPD. Instead, it is recommended that these people use artificial tears or a humidifier.
