Phytoestrogens or plant estrogens are natural compounds found in plants. These compounds have a similar composition as the female hormone or estrogen. Phytoestrogens may mimic the effects of estrogen in the human body, so they are known to combat estrogen deficiency.
Menopausal women suffer from low levels of estrogen. This is why adding foods with high levels of phytoestrogens in their diets can help regulate their hormones and alleviate the discomfort caused by hormonal imbalance. Some foods rich in phytoestrogens are tofu, soybeans, flaxseeds, sesame seeds, tempeh, rice, carrots, apples, berries, barley, mung beans, oats, and wheat.
Foods rich in phytoestrogens are also reported to reduce hot flashes. A cultural study focusing on Asian culture comprehensively explained that Asian countries like Japan, Korea, China, and the Philippines love to include vegetables, herbs, spices, and fruits in their diet. Their diets are rich in phytoestrogens, so menopausal women in these countries rarely experience hormonal imbalances and hot flashes.
Although most studies regarding phytoestrogens yield positive results, there are opposing studies that explain the possible negative effects of consuming too many phytoestrogens. For instance, soy can significantly lower blood pressure, cholesterol, and night sweats. However, some soy products can have negative effects on the body.
