Oral Antihistamines
Histamines are bodily substances that trigger allergic symptoms, such as itching. A popular remedy for allergic responses is an antihistamine. Antihistamines act by lessening histamine’s effects on particular cell receptors. If allergies cause your itchy skin, oral antihistamines are typically the most effective.
Diphenhydramine and chlorpheniramine are two examples of first-generation over-the-counter oral antihistamines. Due to their sedative nature, you may feel sleepy after using them. They also require more frequent doses than the most recent generations because they don’t stay in your system for as long. Both Benadryl and Chlor-Trimeton are first-generation brands.
Taking antihistamine medications before bed is preferable because many of them can cause sleepiness. Speak with your physician or pharmacist if you’re uncertain about which drug would be best for you. Also, make sure the active components in any other medications you take to treat allergy symptoms are not the same as those in the antihistamine or belong to the same drug class.
