Coal Tar
Coal tar is a viscous, black liquid created as a byproduct when coke and coal gas are manufactured from coal and is a type of keratoplastic medicine. Coal tar can be used as a treatment for skin conditions, including psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis, which cause scaling, itching, and peelings. It takes effect by slowing both the rate at which dead skin cells are shed and the rate at which new skin cells are produced. This effect mitigates both scaling and dryness. In addition to helping with the itch, coal tar may also be used to treat several ailments. Many psoriasis medications include coal tar as an active ingredient.
It has been shown that coal tar may inhibit fungal growth and reduce inflammation. This component has been shown to lower sebum production. Coal tar’s anti-fungal effects have been scientifically compared to the anti-fungal drug ketoconazole. Furthermore, it reduces cellular death and flaking of the scalp. Coal tar is found in various cosmetic products, such as bath additives, foams, shampoos, and ointments. Coal tar shampoo should be applied liberally on a damp scalp and hair as a home remedy. Rinse thoroughly and avoid contact with sensitive areas.
