Massage can aid in overcoming insomnia by directly stimulating the hormones contributing to the condition. For example, the body’s production of melatonin and serotonin increases after a massage, while cortisol is reduced by about 30 percent. The hormone melatonin controls the sleep cycle, and it cures insomnia when it is produced naturally.
Massage is not just for loosening tight muscles. A 2022 study involving 70 postmenopausal women experienced one hour of additional nigh time sleep after getting a foot massage that lasted 20 minutes daily. Another study participated by caregivers of cancer patients experiences better sleep and lower stress hormones after having back massages. They also showed reduced anxiety symptoms, blood pressure, and pulse rates.
But, it’s crucial to note that not all types of massage help with insomnia. Massages that include flowing, long, gentle strokes are better used. Meanwhile, those similar to sports massage and deep tissue massage won’t work. They could provide counter effects as they stimulate instead of relax the body. Some massage therapists also develop personal massage sequences for better sleep.
