Topical Remedies
Some topical remedies can minimize swelling caused by chronic inflammatory skin conditions like dermatitis, eczema, and more. Most of these topical remedies also help in managing the pain caused by the swollen area.
A 2013 review says that applying natural topical remedies like witch hazel water, aloe vera gel, ointments with marshmallow root, German chamomile, or yarrow, and colloidal oatmeal added to baths can also lessen inflammation that affects the skin. However, before using topical remedies in swollen areas, perform a patch test first.
Topical anti-inflammatory remedies only reduce inflammation in a particular area where they are applied. On the other hand, orally ingested anti-inflammatory medications affect the entire body. Knowing this, only use topical remedies when the affected area is limited and on the skin’s surface. Once topical remedies are administered, the skin absorbs them in the deeper parts of the body affected by the inflammation, such as the muscle. Typically, topical anti-inflammatories are prescribed when a person experiences sprains, strains, and muscular pains. Aside from that, they are also used to manage osteoarthritis pain in the hand or knee.
