Baking Soda (Sodium Bicarbonate)

Baking soda, also called sodium bicarbonate, is frequently recommended by doctors as a brief, on-demand remedy for acid reflux. It functions similarly to many over-the-counter antacids because it has an alkaline pH, which helps neutralize stomach acidity.

Over-the-counter (OTC) treatments for acid reflux like Tums and proton pump inhibitors are readily available. However, baking soda is a cheap remedy most people already have at home. Although it should be taken only occasionally, baking soda is well-liked for digestive issues like acid indigestion, heartburn, and upset stomachs.

To administer this remedy, use one-half teaspoon of baking soda in four ounces of water. Unpleasant side effects from consuming too much sodium bicarbonate can include nausea, diarrhea, constipation, and stomach cramps. 

Their health may suffer if they consume too much baking soda to cure indigestion, especially older ones. After eating, indigestion, bloating, and gas can be promptly relieved using baking soda to neutralize stomach acid. Sodium bicarbonate is often non-toxic and harmless. If patients consume a solution containing 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda to ease indigestion, wait at least two hours before trying again.
