Bloated or Swollen Stomach
Bloating or swelling stomach is a common IBS symptom. It is often described as the collection of gas inside the gut. As a result, the abdomen is fuller and appears rounder than usual. In particular, with women, belly bulging is a nuisance compared to other more severe symptoms. Bloating is also more noticeable during certain stages of a woman’s menstrual cycle.
Causes of bloating in IBS includes small intestinal bacterial growth, celiac disease, gas content in the stomach, and food or diet. Patients with IBS often complain about having a tight and heavy belly, even if they haven’t eaten yet. A swollen stomach can be uncomfortable and sometimes painful. Bloating due to IBS is often accompanied by vomiting, extreme weight loss, and nausea.
Treating constipation is the key to eliminating bloating caused by IBS. Medicines, laxatives, proper hydration, and a healthy diet can also help ease the discomfort caused by a bloated stomach.
