Adjust the Sleeping Position

Most people who suffer GERD experience an escalation of symptoms while sleeping or attempting to sleep since the body is in a position wherein the stomach contents can quickly go back to the throat. Flare-ups caused by GERD cause sleep interruptions from striking heartburn, coughing, and chest pain due to the irritation of the esophagus.

There are different explanations for the connection between GERD and sleep. One of these is that gravity can’t help keep the stomach acid down, resulting in reflux. Another is that the decrease in swallowing during sleep lessens the force that pushes the stomach acid, and saliva neutralization is reduced because it is lowered during deeper stages of sleep. This sleep activity contributes to the leakage of stomach acids going to the esophagus. The acid will then remain in the esophagus, worsening GERD.

Researchers recommend positioning the head and chest slightly higher than the feet. This position will help prevent and alleviate acid reflux and heartburn. Using a foam wedge under the mattress, using extra pillows, or elevating the bedpost with wood blocks may help in doing this position.
