Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider contains acetic acid, lactic acid, citric acid, and malic acid. It is derived from crushed apples. To ferment this, bacteria and yeast are added to the solution. The liquid goes through a process similar to alcohol, but later on, it will turn into vinegar due to fermentation. Acid reflux results from too many stomach acids, but introducing more acid into the digestive tract benefits the treatment of GERD.
The acids found in apple cider are effective cures for several types of bacteria, including harmful bacteria in the stomach. Apple cider vinegar can also balance the pH level in the stomach acid. Diluted apple cider vinegar is proven effective and safe to consume. The concoction helps in giving a signal to the brain to tighten the lower esophageal sphincter or LES and not to relax the valve, preventing the backflow of acid.
However, apple cider vinegar also has risks and side effects. This includes tooth erosion, thinning of the blood, irritation of the throat, and decreased potassium level. This is why diluted apple cider is advised since it is milder and causes fewer side effects.
