Avoid Wearing Tight Clothes

There are three reasons why wearing tight clothes is linked with GERD. First, tight clothes exert pressure on the stomach, located between the belly button and breastbone. Too much stress in the gut can trigger the acids to flow back to the esophagus. Second, wearing tight clothes will make the stomach feel more gaseous. This can lead to indigestion and acid reflux. And lastly, wearing tight clothes will compress the belly, leading to heartburn and (in worst cases) stomach ulcers.

Patients with GERD should avoid wearing tight clothes like shapewear, tight belts, and tight pants or skinny jeans. Shapewear promptly resists the rest of the stomach. This inhibits the stomach acid from staying inside the abdomen, triggering the acid to move upward to the esophagus. Tight belts are the reason for the high incidence of acid reflux and inflammation. And wearing tight pants or skinny jeans will aggravate acid reflux since it lowers the chance of LES to relax.

It would be best to wear loose clothing to lessen the discomfort, pain, and symptoms caused by GERD. Exerting less stress and pressure on the abdomen can also help the stomach to relax and recover.
