Garlic
Garlic has been used for many years for cooking and treating various illnesses, including the flu. Studies show that it can prevent sickness as it strengthens the immune system. If you get sick, it can help shorten the duration of the illness. The way of preparing garlic can affect its efficiency in treating the flu.
Allicin is a substance found in garlic, which gives its medicinal property. Unfortunately, exposure to heat can deactivate it, so it would no longer be beneficial for healing. However, you can lessen the loss of its medicinal value when cooking by crushing it first and then letting it sit for about 10 minutes before adding in your ingredients. You can also increase the amount of garlic to compensate for the loss.
There are garlic supplements available in the market that you can take if you want a more convenient way of increasing your garlic consumption. There’s also powdered garlic that you can also use in your meal preparation. However, since they are processed, they only have allicin potential but not the properties of allicin. Garlic oil and aged garlic extract are also available.
