Ear Infection
If the otitis media with effusion (glue ear) is untreated, bacteria or viruses might grow in the collected fluid, leading to acute otitis media or infection of the middle ear. The condition usually occurs during or after a viral infection of the upper respiratory system. Contrary to common belief, water inside the ear will not cause otitis media. Depending on the cause, a doctor may prescribe antibiotics.
The middle ear is situated between the eardrum (tympanic membrane) and the inner ear. It is an air-filled area containing sensitive bones called the hammer, anvil, and stirrup. These three sensitive bones or ossicles send sound vibrations from the eardrum to the Auris interna (inner ear), where most ear infections occur.
The most common bacteria that cause an infection in the middle ear are Haemophilus influenzae (nontypeable) and Streptococcus pneumonia. Middle ear infections may likewise be due to viruses that cause colds. They affect children and adults. Parents need to bring their children to a specialist to check for middle ear infections because they can cause meningitis. In addition, the CDC recommends that children younger than two should have routine vaccinations against them.
