Fluids
Drinking plenty of fluids is another way to relieve a dry cough. Having sufficient fluids in the body keeps the throat hydrated, which promotes good healing. This is why drinking at least eight glasses of water daily is recommended. However, cold water might not be as effective as room-temperature water for soothing a cough.
On the other hand, hot water might help relieve a sore throat, chills, and a runny nose. Although more recent studies are needed, a previous one from 2008 found that drinking drinks at room temperature may help with coughing, runny noses, and sneezing.
Warm beverages are beneficial for those experiencing other cold or flu symptoms. According to the same study, hot drinks also help to relieve exhaustion, colds, and sore throats. After drinking the hot beverage until the end, the symptoms were immediately relieved and persisted for some time.
Clear broths, decaffeinated black tea, herbal teas, warm water, and warm fruit juices are a few hot drinks that may be therapeutic.
