Coconut Oil
Like petroleum jelly, coconut oil can coat the lips to prevent them from drying. It is an emollient that locks in moisture in the skin and softens it to prevent chaps from forming or to control existing ones. However, it is better than petroleum jelly because it is edible.
Coconut oil is a remarkable antimicrobial agent. It is not only antibacterial but also antifungal, antiprotozoal, and immunity-boosting. Aside from inhibiting microorganismal growth, coconut oil also enhances the ability of phagocytic immune cells against certain bacteria. These properties help prevent infections in the lips and help control existing infections. Coconut oil may also be used as an alternative to antibiotics and as a cellular immune system modulator.
Using coconut oil on chapped lips is a quick and easy process. You simply have to put a few drops on your lips and move the oil around them until it sets. The application can be repeated as frequently as you prefer. There are no side effects identified with this product. However, you may have to bear with the oil’s distinct smell. Scented coconut oils are available, but choosing the unscented and relatively pure product is advisable.
