Compression Wraps or Stockings
Compression therapy is another option for treating cellulitis, especially if the condition affects the legs. This therapy aims to raise blood flow in the lower parts of the body, particularly the feet, legs, and ankles. It stops blood and other body fluids from pooling and accumulating in the areas being treated. Health experts consider it an effective treatment for inflammation related to poor blood circulation.
Compression therapy entails the use of wraps or stockings that are elastic to achieve the intended compressive effect. Bandages may also be used, although they may not be as effective as compression stockings. Also, there are specialized inflatable wearable devices specifically designed for compression therapy. They are worn on the legs or feet and inflated until the desired compression level is reached.
A small study published in The New England Journal of Medicine in August 2020 shows promising results regarding the use of compression therapy to address recurrent cellulitis on the legs. Based on single-center, non-blinded trials conducted for the study, those who suffered chronic cellulitis and edema of the leg saw a lower recurrence of their conditions after they went through compression therapy.
