Steam Therapy

Steam therapy is believed to help loosen, break down, and extract built-up mucus in the lungs, nasal passages, and throat and may be done in two ways: steam inhalation in a bowl or kettle and steam inhalation in an enclosed room.

Prepare the bowl, hot water, and towel. Carefully move closer to the bowl, about 8 to 10 inches away. Close your eyes and breathe deeply. Take the time to relax the muscles. Let the steam pass through your nose and mouth. Please make sure not to have eye contact with the water as it may hurt the eyes, and take extra care in touching the bowl as close contact may burn the skin.

Steam therapy may also be done in a bath or shower as hot as can be handled by the body. If this is unavailable at home, go to a steam room or spa and follow the same steps. Again, adding eucalyptus oil, natural herbs, and menthol vapor rub is advisable.

This therapy does not directly kill the bacteria or cure the inflammation; instead, it helps the body fight off the disease. It is also beneficial for common colds, flu, chest congestion, and many other conditions.
