Honey
Another surprising home remedy for acute athlete’s foot is honey. Honey is a viscous and sweet substance made by several types of bees. Honey is extracted from the nectar of flowering plants and mixed with other natural enzymes that change its pH level and chemical composition to make it more suitable for long-term storage.
Honey contains hydrogen peroxide, determined by the levels of glucose oxidase from the bee and the catalase from the flower pollen. Honey also has methyl syringate and methylglyoxal, which contribute to the non-peroxide activity and properties of the substance. Honey is also characteristically acidic, with a pH between 3.2 and 4.5, inhibiting most bacterial growth.
People with athlete’s feet can use honey as a topical ointment that they can liberally apply on the infected areas to reduce swelling, itching, heat, and pain. Honey can promote faster and better healing without the need for antibiotics and other medicines. Wellness experts advise putting honey on the infected feet before bedtime and letting it dry overnight. Patients must cover the area with a clean pair of socks, and once they wake up in the morning, rinse the feet with water and dry them properly. Use the honey rub for at least a week or until there’s marked improvement in the appearance and smell of the feet.
