Positioning
During the onset of an asthma attack, proper positioning could help alleviate the symptoms and help the sufferer breathe better and faster. In addition, people who have nocturnal asthma will find it challenging to have terrific sleep quality because they become afflicted with coughing fits if they don’t position themselves properly. While research shows some mixed results regarding positioning, doctors believe that it does help make the asthmatic feel better while waiting for medical help or for the medications to take effect.
Doctors recommend elevating the neck and shoulders with two to three pillows to open the airways and make breathing easier. This position will also help drain mucus much faster as the angle can help the movement happen more quickly. If the patient is a side sleeper, doctors suggest lying on the left side as it can induce better spine stability. This position will also help people who suffer from acid reflux which could trigger asthmatic reactions at night.
Another recommendation is to lie on the back with the head and shoulders elevated and with a pillow tucked under the knees. This will stabilize the body and improve circulation and breathing.
