Honey
There have been mixed results in research regarding honey’s efficacy as a cough suppressant and an asthma attack regulator. However, it cannot be denied that honey can help asthmatics manage and regulate their particular cases.
Doctors recommend taking two teaspoons of natural honey right before bedtime, especially if the patient has nocturnal asthma. Nocturnal asthma diminishes sleep quality as incessant coughing can break out at any time of the night. It is believed that honey stimulates the salivary glands to produce more saliva, which helps break down mucus. In addition, researchers believe that honey may have anti-inflammatory properties, which could keep airways open and help people breathe better.
Some recommendations to manage asthma symptoms include putting a teaspoon of honey in eight ounces of hot water and drinking the concoction twice daily. Others say that mixing ½ teaspoon cinnamon powder with honey and taking it before bedtime can help reduce nighttime coughing fits. Another recommendation is to mix lemon juice with honey in a glass of warm water and drink it. Lemon juice has many antioxidants, and researchers believe it could ease symptoms quickly.
