Ulcers
Herpes ulcers are painful sores that form on the skin. These sores are caused by a virus and are common in people with herpes. This can be treated with antiviral medication, but treatment doesn’t always prevent outbreaks from happening.
A study in the Journal of General Internal Medicine found that taking lysine can help prevent herpes outbreaks worsened by ulcers. The study, which included 150 people with active herpes, found that those who took 1 gram of lysine per day had fewer outbreaks than those who didn’t take it.
If a person has an ulcer, a doctor will likely prescribe an antiviral medication to help relieve pain and speed healing time. They may also specify another type of medicine if they have a fever or other symptoms of herpes at the same time as their ulcer appears.
