Use an Ice Pack
A person suffering from a hernia can use an ice pack to reduce swelling and pain. Applying an ice pack for 20 minutes every two hours will help relieve symptoms. To prevent frostbite, use a towel between the ice pack and the skin for up to 10 to 20 minutes. Do not apply ice directly to the skin because it can cause frostbite.
Use an elastic support bandage to help hold the hernia in place. The goal is to keep the bulge from pushing through the muscle wall and causing more damage. IFor a protruding hernia, do not wear tight undergarments or pants that reduce air circulation around the area.
