Scrotal Swelling
Scrotal swelling refers to the enlargement of your scrotal sac, which houses your testicles. It’s a condition that can occur because of underlying health conditions or injuries. In addition, fluid buildup, abnormal growths like hernias, and inflammation can also lead to swelling of the area. Depending on what’s causing the problem, it can either be painful or painless. Usually, it’s best to have it checked, especially if there’s considerable discomfort involved. Moreover, failure to receive timely treatment may result in testicle loss.
The swelling of the scrotum can occur gradually or rapidly, often because of testicular torsion, an event causing testicles to twist, cutting off the circulation of blood in the process. It’s a painful injury that may cause scrotum death quickly if not treated. Specific medical conditions are also tied to this swelling: trauma, testicular cancer, orchitis, hydrocele, hernia, epididymitis, heart failure, infection, and inflammation.
Aside from the scrotal sac’s enlargement, additional symptoms may be present, depending on its cause. The treatment options will also be based on the diagnosis. For example, antibiotics might be prescribed if infections are the main culprit of swelling. On the other hand, corrective surgeries may be recommended if conditions like hernia or varicocele.
