Zinc is one of the body’s essential nutrients, as it serves many different roles to ensure our health. Its processes include gene expression, DNA synthesis, enzymatic reactions, protein synthesis, immune function, wound healing, and development and growth. However, because the human body cannot produce or store the mineral naturally, it can only be taken with the consumption of specific foods and supplements.
Hepatitis C can lower the levels of zinc in the body, which is a mineral that the immune system and liver require to function optimally. Research suggests that consuming zinc supplements may ease its symptoms and enhance the treatment options for the condition. For example, a Japanese study showed that those with the disease who had taken zinc supplements for seven years had significantly reduced the likelihood of developing liver cancer.
However, just as health complications may arise from zinc deficiency, so too can the excessive intake of the mineral lead to adverse effects. Some symptoms of zinc toxicity are vomiting and nausea, appetite loss, diarrhea, abdominal cramps and pain, compromised immune function, and other nutritional deficiencies. Therefore, consulting a health professional should be done before taking zinc supplements.
