Transmission of the Hepatitis A virus is not limited to feces-to-mouth contact alone. It can also be transmitted through sexual contact with an infected individual. Sexually active individuals are considered at risk for Hepatitis A if they live with or have intercourse with an infected individual, engage in other forms of sexual contact with exposure to body fluids, or inject drugs. This virus can be transmitted by contact with contaminated bodily fluids, including blood, sperm, and vaginal fluid.
After receiving a diagnosis, it is essential to take precautions to protect oneself and one’s partner. People who are infected with the virus should take extra precautions to engage in safe sex, which includes the use of latex condoms, in order to avoid contracting viral hepatitis or passing it on to others. Even using a condom might not be enough protection since touching an infected condom can allow the virus to spread to the hands and then onto the mouth. At this point, the significance of maintaining a high level of personal cleanliness becomes clear. Taking a shower and washing the hands both before and after engaging in sexual activity is recommended.
