Helps in the Prevention/Treatment of Diabetes
Turmeric contains various compounds that provide a wide range of health benefits. Another benefit that turmeric offers are helping prevent and treat diabetes, and disorders related to diabetes, such as diabetic kidney disease (diabetic nephropathy), affect people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
Unfortunately, the studies are still confined to lab animals instead of humans. But that is on the side of the medical community. Practitioners of folk medicine, naturopaths, herbalists, and practitioners of Ayurvedic and Chinese traditional medicine have used turmeric for a long time.
One of turmeric’s active compounds is curcumin, which provides most of the health benefits for a wide range of medical conditions. Curcumin contains tetrahydrocurcumin, one of its various substances. A study on this particular substance used lab animals with type 2 diabetes, feeding them 80mg of tetrahydrocurcumin per kilogram of body weight for 45 days. The trial significantly decreased the animals’ blood sugar while plasma insulin levels increased. Additionally, another study involving obese mice with type 2 diabetes that received curcumin supplements for 16 weeks showed a significant reduction in blood insulin levels.
