Hyponatremia
Hyponatremia is a condition where the body isn’t getting enough sodium to function correctly. The body depends on complex functions to keep going; if something is out of balance, it can cause all sorts of issues. In this case, the water and sodium balance is off, leading to potential troubles. For example, exercise and strenuous activities can potentially cause swollen hands. However, if your hands get swollen often during exercise, it could be a potential sign of hyponatremia. It’s especially common for endurance athletes, who train for long periods without taking in enough water. Dehydration is a common cause of hyponatremia, though surprisingly enough, too much water is also a cause. Taking diuretic (water) pills and drinking too much water (a very rare occurrence) can lead to hyponatremia.
The condition is rare, as the body is efficient at keeping a careful balance. As such, hyponatremia is typically caused by other health conditions. Nevertheless, if you suspect that you might have hyponatremia, it’s a good idea to get yourself checked by a doctor. Aside from swollen hands, you’ll also suffer dizziness, fatigue, vomiting, and more.
