Multiple Sclerosis
Autoimmune diseases are some of the most frustrating and distressing health conditions, as they can be challenging to treat. For example, multiple sclerosis (MS) is a condition where the body attacks otherwise healthy cells — in this case, the body’s immune system attacks the protective coating around vulnerable nerve fibers. As a result, those with MS tend to suffer from nerve damage as a side effect of their health condition. The nerve damage can lead to hand numbness, muscle weakness, headaches, slurred speech, fatigue, double vision, pins and needles feeling, and more. Fortunately, there are treatments for MS, including interferon beta medications. The medication is injected into the muscle and reduces the frequency of flare-ups.
Multiple sclerosis can be frustrating as there is nothing wrong with the body, yet the immune system is compromised to the point where it attacks healthy cells. It’s frustrating to deal with all sorts of distressing symptoms due to the immune system turning on itself. It’s similar to an allergic reaction, where the body overreacts to a foreign substance that poses no threat.
