Over-washing
Washing hair too frequently can also cause hair breakage. This is because the scalp secretes an oil called sebum, just like the human’s skin. Sebum can keep the scalp hydrated when sufficiently produced and provide healthy hair textures. However, yeast may also appear when excessive oil causes dandruff to thrive on the scalp. Aside from that, layers of oil, grime, dead skin cells, and product buildups can clog pores, causing an infection to spread to the scalp and harm the hair follicles. For these reasons, hair washing is important.
But even if daily washes are acceptable if a person has oily hair, it’s still not recommended to wash hair more than once a day. On the other hand, very dry hair only requires weekly shampooing.
Surfactants, which are substances found in shampoos, help in hair cleaning by eliminating surface dirt from the scalp. Some shampoos also contain sulfates, which create a thick lather that helps remove excessive oil and completely clean the hair. Sulfate-containing shampoos, however, often lead to dryness and hair breakage, making them less recommended for long-term use. So, it is vital to use a conditioner since it moisturizes the hair, giving it more luster and smoothness.
