Fatigue and Unrefreshing Sleep
Fatigue and unrefreshing sleep are common symptoms of gluten intolerance. If a person experiences these symptoms, it may be due to the following:
- Inflammation in the body caused by damage from gluten sensitivity. This is a reduction in the number of nutrients a person’s body absorbs due to a malabsorption problem
- The presence of other food sensitivities that cause gastrointestinal distress when gluten is present
- Stress from dealing with chronic pain
- Lack of deep sleep or REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. The body needs this type of deep restorative rest at night so that it can function well during the day. If a person is not getting enough REM sleep, it will make them feel tired during the day and potentially lead to other health problems.
Gluten sensitivity can cause stress on the body, making it difficult to sleep well at night. When a person doesn’t get enough REM sleep, it’s harder for the body to repair itself after the day.
