Sedentary behaviors essentially refer to a lack of physical activity. Long periods of idleness and inactivity can also compromise the body’s metabolism and ability to regulate blood glucose and blood pressure. Studies have also found that sedentary people are at a higher risk of early death, thus, showing the importance of regular exercise.
Sedentary lifestyles also impact mental well-being. A study involving over ten thousand participants shows that those with the behavior are more susceptible to mental health conditions. Recent reviews also indicate strong links between sedentary behaviors and the increased risks of developing depression. Therefore, an active lifestyle is recommended to avoid the psychological and physical risks associated with the behavior.
Regular physical activity can significantly reduce, if not diminish, conditions like heart disease and obesity. It can also help manage many pre-existing disorders. Combining cardiovascular exercises like cycling and running with strength-training activities is best to achieve ideal results. However, even an hour of moderate-intensity daily exercise regimen and limiting the amount of time sitting or lying down can make a difference.
