Peppermint

While many other foods can trigger the symptoms of acid reflux, peppermint candies or peppermint tea has an effect that’s very similar to chocolate. It can trigger the symptoms of GER by relaxing the LES, the muscle between the stomach and the esophagus. What it does is it effectively opens up the esophagus to stomach acids, which can cause a host of problems. If you happen to be a fan of peppermint tea (or the candies), the bad news is you’ll probably have to avoid this until you can tone down the symptoms.

Heartburn is something that can be mitigated provided you take the time to work on it. Unfortunately, acid reflux can progress into a more chronic form known as GERD if the symptoms persist for too long. Such is the reason why it’s a good idea to look at this list and figure out which foods to avoid.

The unfortunate thing is that peppermint is often considered one of the more guilt-free snacks and desserts, and people even drink it as a relaxing tea. The good news is there are other options with regard to tea — it’s only peppermint that can cause issues for those with acid reflux.
