The pain might not come directly from the flanks but from your chest, back, or stomach muscles. Muscle injuries due sprains and strains, overuse, a sedentary lifestyle, stress, and tension commonly cause muscle pain. The pain could be temporary because you stayed in a physically stressful or unusual position for a long time. 

The pain you feel in your flank could be from one side where the muscle was injured. But if you maintain a sedentary lifestyle, you can feel flank pain on both sides. Sometimes, the pain can occur on your upper body’s right or left side.
