Improves Skin Health
A Marine Drugs review in 2018 stated the components of fish oil, such as omega-3, improve and support the skin’s overall health. In the study, researchers found evidence that it maintains homeostasis, enhances barrier function, inhibits the inflammation caused by ultraviolet light, and promotes skin healing. Scientists believe these benefits result from fish oil’s PUFAs, like docosahexaenoic acid, DHA, and eicosapentaenoic acid or EPA.
In a research article, DHA and EPA were found to have the ability to inhibit inflammation. For example, some animal studies showed that fish oil reduces eczema’s symptoms. Another study on rats reduced the itch-related dryness and scratching associated with the condition. In another study, the supplementation of omega-3 reduced lesions caused by acne over ten weeks. However, some studies have produced mixed results.
Research on lipids in disease and health found most participants experienced improvements in acne symptoms. However, there were other individuals whose conditions worsened more. For this reason, many believe fish oil generates the desired results for some, but no concrete evidence supports that it will benefit everyone in treating or managing skin conditions like acne.
