Genetics
Fibromyalgia may not necessarily be passed down from generation to generation, but the disorder tends to cluster within biologically-related families. There’s a greater chance of developing the disease for those whose immediate family members have fibromyalgia than those who don’t. In addition, there are DNA studies where some people with fibromyalgia and many other pain-related symptoms and syndromes have also turned on some genes that could potentially explain why the disorder may run within families. It means that genetics may play a role in the occurrence of fibromyalgia.
Some genes identified as associated with fibromyalgia play critical roles in how the nervous system responds to pain. Also, genes are closely linked with mental conditions like anxiety and disorder, which could be why specific antidepressants and similar medications might reduce their symptoms. But as there’s no conclusive evidence to suggest that antidepressants will work to ease fibromyalgia, it’s a general rule of thumb to seek the advice of a medical professional first before committing to these drugs.
