Larger-Than-Normal Breasts in Men
Gynecomastia is the condition where there is an increase in the breast gland tissue for men and boys. The state is caused by an imbalance in the hormones testosterone and estrogen. Gynecomastia can affect one or both breasts, causing them to appear uneven. Although health experts say that going through puberty is one of the leading causes of gynecomastia, they are also quick to admit that it can be a symptom of something else.
Doctors are quick to clarify that the condition can go away on its own, but they don’t discount the possibility that surgery is also an option. Usually, the condition may manifest in swollen or tender breast tissue with increased nipple sensitivity, especially when rubbing against clothes. Adolescents may also experience moderate to acute pain depending on the severity of the tenderness.
People with fatty liver disease can experience the condition because of the increased production of the hormone androstenedione. The increased production results in the aromatization of androstenedione into estrogen, an increase in SHBG, and the loss of clearance of the androgens by the liver. These factors result in the development of larger breasts in young men and adults.
