Styes
Tears are important to lubricate the eyes and are necessary to make one’s vision clearer. Without tears, eye infection may occur, for the eyes must have a smooth, wet, and clear surface. Insufficient tears cause dry eyes, and senior adults are mostly affected. It is chronic, making them feel uncomfortable with a stingy and burning feeling in the eyes. As a person ages, tear production diminishes, and medical maintenance is also one of its contributing factors. Evaporation of tears, especially due to climate changes and conditions, also decreases tear volume. Tears consist of three important layers – water, oil, and mucus, which are responsible for protecting our eyes and serve as nourishment on their frontal tissues. If any of these three are absent, tears will not be equally spread to the eyes, and evaporation will occur.
Treatments for dry eyes may be given, and prescriptions may differ depending on their causes. One can purchase an over-the-counter tear solution to supplement and replace natural tears. Eye drops and ointments can also help suppress eye inflammation.
