What Are The Triggers Of Eye Pain? 14 Common Causes

Keratitis

A human cornea is a transparent eye tissue that covers the iris (colored part of the eye) and pupil (controls the light that enters the eye) and is responsible for refracting and bending the light that goes inside the eyes. If this arch-shaped tissue is affected, an eye pain called keratitis may have occurred.

Keratitis is an inflammation of the cornea. It is a common condition that most likely happens to persons who wear contact lenses. Like other eye pain symptoms, keratitis may also manifest redness and blurriness of eyes, excessive tearing and fluid discharges, pain, and irritation.

Either of the following can cause keratitis: minor eye injury from animal scratch; wearing of contact lenses for too long; bacteria like Staphylococcus aureus (a common pathogen creating diseases) as an example; fungi exposure such as Aspergillus that mostly exist in tropical and subtropical environments; or parasite penetration (Acanthamoeba) that are commonly found on lakes, polluted waters, sewages, and outdoor areas like forests. If left untreated complications may occur, and worst, total blindness.
