Daytime Sleepiness
Daytime sleepiness or hypersomnia is another common cause of excessive yawning. Individuals who find themselves awning frequently during the day may be a sign of not getting enough quality sleep at night. In some cases, hypersomnia may be due to restless legs syndrome, depression, and bipolar disorder. Excessive alcohol consumption and taking illicit drugs may also lead to hypersomnia.
Besides excessive yawning, individuals with daytime sleepiness may not feel refreshed despite regular naps during the day. In addition, individuals with daytime sleepiness often fall asleep during the day, often while eating or talking. Despite the extended sleep periods in the daytime, these individuals still sleep for long hours at night.
There are several things that individuals with hypersomnia can do to manage daytime sleepiness. Taking frequent breaks throughout the day to rest is a natural and effective way to manage daytime sleepiness. Avoiding caffeine after lunchtime and alcohol before bedtime can also reduce the symptoms of daytime sleepiness. Lifestyle changes such as modifications to sleep hygiene may also be recommended. By understanding the different types of treatment available for hypersomnia, individuals can work with their healthcare team to develop an individualized plan that meets their needs.
