High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound
High-intensity focused ultrasound is a safe and effective treatment for men with enlarged prostates. The procedure has a success rate of more than 90 percent. This treatment uses sound waves to create heat and shrink an enlarged prostate.
High-intensity focused ultrasound is usually performed as an outpatient procedure, which means the patient can go home the same day. The procedure usually takes less than an hour. The patient lies on their backs with their legs open during the procedure. A gel will be applied to the skin to help keep the ultrasound probe in place. The probe will then be inserted into the rectum near the prostate gland. The patient may feel pressure or fullness during a high-intensity focused ultrasound session. In addition, they may also feel a brief burning sensation as the ultrasound wave passes through the prostate.
After the procedure, the patient may have some soreness in the rectum or pelvic region. They may also experience urination problems, such as difficulty urinating or a weak urine stream. These issues usually improve within a few weeks. Complications from high-intensity focused ultrasound are rare but can include urinary incontinence, erectile dysfunction, and urinary tract infections.
