Transurethral Microwave Thermotherapy
Transurethral microwave thermotherapy, or TUMT, is an outpatient medical procedure indicated for men with lower urinary symptoms caused by prostate gland enlargement. It is usually prescribed in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia experiencing urinary frequency, urgency, difficulty starting urination, nocturia, and urinary tract infections.
This medical procedure is considered safe with a low risk of side effects or complications. It is a less invasive procedure indicated for men with other health conditions from whom more invasive surgery is counter-indicated.
During the procedure, a small microwave antenna will be inserted through the tip of the penis and into the urethra. The antenna will be extended until it finally reaches the prostate. The microwave antenna will then emit microwave energy that will heat and ultimately destroy excess prostate tissue blocking urine flow.
To determine whether transurethral microwave thermotherapy is the appropriate treatment for an enlarged prostate, patients must seek the advice of their physicians. Factors such as the severity of symptoms and the size and shape of the prostate will determine if an individual is a good candidate for transurethral microwave thermotherapy.
