There are several types of laser surgery to treat enlarged prostates treat enlarged prostate and relieve urinary symptoms, like photoselective vaporization of the prostate, Holmium laser ablation of the prostate (HoLAP), and Holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP).
The choice of surgery type depends on several factors, including the size of the prostate, the severity of symptoms, and the patient’s preferences. These types of laser surgery may be performed as outpatient procedures using local anesthesia. After surgery, patients usually stay in the hospital for one or two nights for observation. They may have a catheter in their bladder to help with urine drainage for a few days after surgery. Most patients expect to return to normal activities within two weeks after surgery.
Laser surgery is generally safe and effective, but like any surgical procedure, some risks are involved. Complications from laser surgery are rare but can include bleeding, infection, and injury to nearby organs such as the bladder or rectum.
