12 Symptoms Of Enlarged Prostate (Early Warning Signs)

Unusual Smell and Color of Urine

Men with benign prostatic hyperplasia may notice that their urine may have developed an unusual color or smell. These symptoms are closely linked to urinary retention. When the urine is not excreted properly, it stays in the bladder longer and becomes more concentrated.

In some cases, unusual urine smell is also a tell-tale sign of urinary infection. To resolve these symptoms, patients must undergo a comprehensive diagnostic exam to assess the extent to which the prostate gland has enlarged. Patients diagnosed with moderate to severe prostate gland enlargement are more likely to report unusual urine color and smell.

Blood in the urine may also be present in patients who report unusual urine characteristics. Also called hematuria, blood in the urine results from dilated veins on the surface of the enlarged prostate. Patients must undergo antibiotic therapy if the cause of unusual urine color and smell is an infection due to urinary retention.

It is also crucial that men with enlarged prostates undergo surgery to remove some parts or the entire enlarged prostate. The surgical procedure will be based on the severity and extent of prostate gland enlargement.
