Bladder Stones
Bladder stones disrupt the urine flow and can result in an enlarged prostate. When the bladder retains excessive urine volume, bladder stones can grow bigger or increase in number. Worsening bladder stones place greater pressure on the prostate leading to complications that can reduce a patient’s quality of life.
To lower the risk of men with bladder stones developing benign prostatic hyperplasia, they must undergo procedures designed to break down bladder stones. Depending on the severity of the condition, bladder stones may be expelled through medications or surgery.
Male patients must undergo a comprehensive examination to determine whether bladder stones or passed kidney stones have caused prostate damage or functional abnormalities. A digital rectal exam may be ordered for men over 50, and a cystoscopy, X-ray, and urinalysis to ensure an accurate diagnosis.
Bladder stones are excruciating. A smooth and efficient passing of bladder stones can alleviate the pain and other urinary symptoms. Physicians may recommend medications in mild to moderate cases marked by worsening lower urinary tract symptoms. However, in severe cases of benign prostatic hyperplasia, a surgical procedure called transurethral resection of the prostate can further ease the pain and discomfort after passing bladder stones.
