Cirrhosis of the liver
Enzymes are specialized proteins that catalyze or speed up, specific biochemical reactions in the body. The liver is responsible for producing many of the enzymes needed for these reactions to occur. Therefore, elevated liver enzymes may indicate that the liver is not functioning correctly. In addition, elevated liver enzymes may be due to various conditions, including cirrhosis.
Elevated liver enzymes can be caused by cirrhosis. In some cases, liver enzyme levels can still be normal for some patients with cirrhosis. However, an AST/ALT ratio higher than one means a patient may have cirrhosis. For individuals with elevated liver enzymes due to cirrhosis, it’s essential to see a doctor so they can determine the cause and recommend treatment.
A few things patients can do to manage elevated liver enzymes caused by cirrhosis include avoiding alcohol consumption, eating a healthy, balanced diet, regular exercise, getting adequate sleep, and using stress management techniques. In addition, effective treatment for cirrhotic patients with elevated liver enzymes may include a liver transplant and long-term use of prescribed medications.
