Kidney Inflammation
Problems with the kidneys can be an indication that a person has lupus. The condition often manifests in people with systemic lupus erythematosus or SLE, which usually affects the skin. However, it is called lupus nephritis when it involves the kidneys and causes organ inflammation.
The inflammation of the kidneys affects the glomeruli, a network of tiny blood vessels that works as the kidneys’ filtering mechanism. As usual, doctors are not sure how lupus nephritis starts. They think it has something to do with an individual’s family history, but it could also be caused by pollutants, toxic chemicals, viruses, and infections.
Lupus nephritis symptoms may include high blood pressure, swelling of the lower legs and feet, darker urine, blood in the urine, pain in the side of the body, and frequent urination at night.
People with lupus should see their doctor if they notice any of the symptoms of lupus nephritis. Early detection of the disease helps in successful treatment, preventing permanent kidney damage. It should be included in their regular checkup because damage to the kidneys usually may not have visible symptoms unless the condition is already severe.
