Trauma or Injury
Poking things into the ear, from sharp objects to cotton buds, is an action that children and adults usually do. However, people should avoid doing such things because the ear canal, the middle, and the inner ear are sensitive and easily damaged. Further, the skin is thin and prone to abrasions, even with soft objects like cotton swabs. Thus, it is vital not to cause injury or trauma to the ears because it can lead to earache and other conditions, such as soreness, inflammation, micro-abrasions, leakage of body fluid, and infections.
Poking things into the ear can tear the eardrum. A slap on the ear, boxed ear, or loud noise can also cause trauma and acute earache. The pain could be sudden and severe. It may even cause bleeding and temporary deafness. While a perforated eardrum can heal independently, it is best to see a doctor because there could be other symptoms and conditions that a doctor can see during an inspection of the ear canal and the inner ear.
